ABOUT

I am a clinical psychologist in Berkeley, California, having been in private practice since 1980. My practice is conducted in person in my South Berkeley office, or virtually, either via teletherapy or Zoom. It includes adults and adolescents in both short and long-term psychotherapy, parent consultation, and clinical consultation with professional colleagues.

I have a bachelor’s degree in history from Princeton University, a master’s degree in teaching from Reed College, and master’s and doctoral degrees from the California School of Professional Psychology. I have taught and supervised in graduate and post-graduate programs; consulted; and engaged in research and writing, mostly in the areas of psychobiography and art.

My professional study has emphasized psychoanalytic, existential, relational and narrative approaches. I have a strong interest in the creative process. My work is also informed by mindfulness practices, the arts, and nature. I believe the ability to be open to beauty in all of its forms is a powerfully healing therapeutic agent.

I have been involved with the nonprofits Creative Growth Art Center and Oakland Leaf, both in Oakland, California, for over twenty years. The former is an art studio and gallery for adult artists with developmental disabilities, and the latter provides free, high quality after school programs for Oakland youth in underserved neighborhoods, including schoolyard gardens, arts programs, and social and emotional learning. I am committed to social, racial, and disability justice, and strive to work in solidarity with members of the BIPOC, LGBTQIA and Disability communities.

APPROACH

Psychotherapy is a collaborative process. It thrives on curiosity, creative play, strong questions, and most importantly, close listening and full attention. Being present, open, and available are critical to a successful outcome.

Humans are inherently and perhaps uniquely story makers. Working together, clients and I establish the storylines of their lives. Gradually, behavioral and emotional patterns emerge, and together we examine those patterns, understanding how they played a useful purpose at one time in each person’s life and weighing their utility in the present. As these stories are elaborated upon and examined in the context of a safe therapeutic relationship, clients develop a deeper understanding of and empathy for themselves. They feel more capable of making changes and become more creatively engaged in the direction of their lives. It is an exciting and at times a frightening undertaking. One that brings with it a heightened sense of aliveness.
